SPX Engineering Design ProcessSince the SPX Engineering Lab’s inception in 2016, students have been taught a unique design process through hands-on instruction in a variety of engineering disciplines from traditional smelting to modern 3-D printing. The lab was the idea of former mechanical engineer and current faculty member Larry Sanchez. He teaches the traditional engineering process, but from a Catholic perspective. Ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve are taught in their Latin and accompanied by Catholic teachings.

The 1,500 sq. ft. lab is comprised of mini-lathes, 3-D printers, acrylic processing, welding/plasma cutting, smelting, a vertical milling machine, and a computer lab. The recently upgraded PCs are primarily used for coding and design. The design work is accomplished with the industry standard SolidWorks, of which students have the opportunity to become certified in. University engineering programs such as UNM’s recognize the certification, which grants credit hours and saves tuition. The $100,000 lab was funded through donations and grants totaling $30,000.

With the ability to design and fabricate, the lab strives to be self-sustaining. Damaged components, added furnishings, signage, and utility modifications, both in and out of the lab, allow students first-hand experience implementing the St. Pius X Engineering Design Process.
